Algorithmic Fairness as an Inconsistent Concept

This article investigates whether algorithmic fairness is an inconsistent concept (the inconsistency thesis). Drawing on the work of Kevin Scharp, it argues that inconsistent concepts can apply and disapply at the same time.

The article shows that paradigmatic issues of algorithmic fairness fit this description. It further examines similarities and differences to received views and considers alternatives to the inconsistency thesis. Finally, it articulates suggestions on how the inconsistency thesis might nevertheless hold ground, or at the very least be understood as a distinctive option in argumentative space whose status and implications merit further evaluation (pp. 53–68).
