AI and Security of Supply in the Energy Sector at the NRW Energy Law Day

What role does artificial intelligence play in ensuring security of supply in the energy sector? This question was at the heart of a presentation by Prof. Dr. Max Baumgart at the 5th NRW Energy Law Day at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, where he also addressed current regulatory developments at the European level.

The annual conference, held under the theme “Governance of the EnergyTransition”, brought together experts from academia, public administration,politics, and industry to discuss pressing issues in energy law. The NRW EnergyLaw Day is jointly organized by the Düsseldorf Institute for Energy Law (DIER),the Institute of Energy Economics Law (EWIR) at the University of Cologne, andthe Institute for Mining and Energy Law (IBE) at Ruhr University Bochum.

As part of the panel Climate Protection through Future Technologies inthe Energy Sector”, Prof. Dr. Baumgart outlined four key theses on how thegrowing use of AI is reshaping the energy policy triangle—often referred to asthe energy trilemma. He also examined how the EU AI Act aims to regulatesecurity of supply in the energy sector, highlighting in particular theremaining uncertainties regarding its scope for distribution system operators.
