Can Crypto Assets be Rooted? Lessons from Five Years in Regenerative Finance

ReFi, or Regenerative Finance, emerged as a purportedly green response to developments in DeFi (Decentralised Finance) within the crypto sphere, and has drawn substantial criticism for relying on hyper-speculative financial tools and energy-intensive technologies in the name of planetary regeneration. Yet, the question asked by the advocates of ReFi remains real: Can the growing crypto-economy contribute to a green transition across the globe?
In this talk, Dr. Andrea Leiter and Catherine Bischoff, the leadership team behind the Sovereign Nature Initiative, a non-profit at the intersection of ecology, blockchain technology, and economics, will share experiences and perspectives from their five-year journey in ReFi. The talk addresses not only the conceptual and academic challenge of “squaring the circle” of green finance, but also the practical industry experience of negotiating with investors, industry partners, and conservation organisations to develop a credible green crypto proposition. Dr. Andrea Leiter is the Director of the Amsterdam Center for International Law and currently a Senior Visiting Fellow at the Zug Insitute for Blockchain Research Catherine Bischoff is is a strategist working at the intersection of systems theory, startup ecosystems, and climate innovation across Europe and North America.
